Gaagal Wanggaan National Park is a highly spiritual & cultural area to the Gumbaynggirr people, it is an integral component of our Gumbaynggirr Jagun (Homelands).

Both Unkya LALC & Nambucca Heads LALC are owners in common in Fee simple (Freehold Title), on behalf of the Aboriginal Owners. The land includes the Gaagal Wanggaan (Beach South) National Park & the bed of Warrell Creek.

Four Land Claims were lodged in the 1980’s & 1990’s they were initially rejected. Unkya & Nambucca Heads LALC’s lodged appeals in the Land & Environment Court, the court over turned the decision & ordered the parties (LALC’S & Government) to negotiate a Settlement Agreement.

All Parties negotiated the Settlement Agreement which included the Gaagal Wanggaan (Beach South) National Park Part 4A lease. The National Park was gazette on 22 April 2010, the Park is jointly managed by BoM (Board of Management) which consists of Aboriginal Owners who are the priority & majority of the board.

The Native Title Consent determination for Gaagal Wanggaan National Park was handed down by the federal court on the 14th of August 2014 on Jagun (Country). The Native Title Consent determination allows the Gumbaynggirr Traditional Owners the right to:

  • Hunt
  • Camp
  • Fish & gather Natural Resources
  • Conduct Ceremonies
  • Teach the physical, cultural & spiritual attributes of places & areas of importance
  • Access to protect& maintain from physical harm the Sites in the Consent Determination Area which are significant to the Gumbaynggirr people under their Traditional Laws & Customs.
